AmaWaterways’ new AmaMaya will host a dedicated Mekong history cruise in August 2027, combining river cruising with expert-led exploration of Vietnam War sites and an optional extension culminating at Long Tan on Vietnam Veterans Day.
The eight-day Riches of the Mekong and Vietnam War journey is being offered by Mat McLachlan History Cruises and will explore the region’s history from ancient civilisations through to modern conflict.
AmaMaya made its debut on the Mekong River on 3 August 2026, with the 2027 departure providing travellers with an opportunity to experience the new vessel alongside specialist historical programming.
History takes centre stage on the Mekong
The fully escorted cruise will be accompanied by an expert historian, with exclusive onboard seminars providing context to the destinations visited along the Mekong.
A key component will be two days dedicated to exploring Vietnam War sites across the Upper and Lower Mekong Delta.
Guests travelling with Mat McLachlan History Cruises will also have complimentary access to AmaWaterways’ cultural shore excursions, onboard dining and experiences throughout the voyage.
The eight-day cruise is priced from $5,965 per person twin share.
Long Tan commemoration adds significance
Travellers can extend the river journey with a five-day land program focused on Australian military history in South Vietnam.
Priced from $2,474 per person twin share, the extension includes visits to the Cu Chi Tunnels, Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau and Nui Dat.
The journey culminates with a commemoration at Long Tan on Vietnam Veterans Day, 18 August 2027, marking the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.
