Fiji’s sees boom in private yachting

Fiji’s yachting industry is riding a wave of growth, with the latest 2024 survey conducted at Port Denarau Marina revealing a 4 per cent year-on-year rise in visiting yachts. A total of 831 vessels brought 7,223 visitors – including owners, crew and guests – contributing an impressive FJD $52.75 million in direct spending to the local economy.

This spending covered everything from fuel, maintenance, and dockage, to local dining, provisioning, cultural excursions and yacht charter fees. The average visitor spent FJD $7,302, while smaller yachts under 24 metres spent around FJD $37,174. Superyachts delivered a significant boost, spending an average of FJD $240,000 per vessel.

Superyachts and charter activity on the rise

Cynthia Rasch, CEO of Port Denarau Marina, said: “The latest yachting industry survey confirms what we’ve seen on the ground – a thriving and rapidly growing sector. With a significant 23.3 per cent increase in the industry’s overall contribution and a 300 per cent surge in charter weeks compared to 2023, the results speak for themselves. Our targeted marketing, in close partnership with Tourism Fiji, has played a pivotal role in this success.”

Government revenue from the sector stood at FJD $11.56 million, highlighting its increasing value as a key contributor to the nation’s fiscal health.

Unique experiences drive longer stays

Yachts stayed an average of 219 days in Fiji, with superyachts averaging 56 days – a clear sign of the destination’s appeal. Favourite cruising grounds included the Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands, Taveuni, Savusavu, and Kadavu. Visitors praised the cultural richness of village visits, thrilling manta ray encounters in the Yasawas, and diving in Viani Bay.

Tourism Fiji Acting COO, Vimlesh Magan, added, “Fiji’s yachting appeal lies not just in our stunning seascapes, but in the unique cultural encounters and warm local hospitality that set us apart. The growth we’re seeing is a direct result of strategic collaboration, and we’re excited to continue showcasing Fiji as the ultimate cruising destination in the South Pacific.”

Charting a course for sustainable growth

The report also highlights the need for improvements in reef marking, customs procedures, and marina infrastructure to ensure sustainable, long-term development.

With continued public-private collaboration and strategic investment, Fiji is poised to cement its place as one of the world’s most sought-after yachting destinations.
