New Zealand’s Minister for Tourism and Hospitality Louise Upston has joined the Australasian delegation at Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami, signalling renewed commitment to rebuilding cruise tourism across the region.
The visit included meetings with Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) leadership and key industry stakeholders, providing a platform to discuss strategies to boost cruise ship deployment and enhance regional competitiveness.
Focus on rebuilding cruise visitation
Minister Upston said the goal is to attract more cruise ships to New Zealand, Australia and the wider Pacific, positioning the region as a must-visit destination for global cruise lines.
“We want more visitors to come to New Zealand, to come to Australia, to come to the Pacific, to have an amazing experience,” she said.
The Minister emphasised that both New Zealand and Australia are open for business and eager to welcome increased cruise activity.
Industry collaboration key to success
The Australasian delegation includes representatives from the New Zealand Cruise Association (NZCA), Australian Cruise Association (ACA) and CLIA, highlighting a coordinated regional approach to industry engagement.
CLIA Executive Director in Australasia Joel Katz said the Minister’s presence at Seatrade sends a strong signal to global cruise operators.
“Competition among destinations is intense, so it’s critical that we create the right environment to attract cruise ships and grow the economic benefits of cruise tourism in our region,” Katz said.
Building confidence among cruise lines
Katz added that direct engagement with industry leaders is essential to rebuilding confidence and ensuring Australasia remains competitive in the global cruise market.
The meetings in Miami reinforce ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration between government and industry, supporting long-term growth across New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific.
