Norrøna Adventure yacht: TIME World’s Greatest Places

Norrøna Adventure’s expedition yacht Varg has been named in TIME’s World’s Greatest Places 2026 list, highlighting growing demand for ultra-small expedition cruising in remote Arctic destinations.

The 62-foot sailing yacht, which accommodates just six guests, was recognised as one of the world’s standout new places to stay, placing a spotlight on boutique expeditions, yachting and small ship sailing in Northern Norway.

Ultra-small ship model gains global recognition

TIME’s annual list identifies 100 destinations and travel experiences globally, spanning accommodation, cruises and attractions, with selections based on recommendations from its international contributors.

Varg’s inclusion reflects a broad shift towards low-capacity, experience-led expedition cruising and yacht sailings, offering an alternative to larger vessels operating in the same regions. It’s all about intimate experiences that are an integral part of small ship yachting adventures.

Purpose-built for Arctic exploration, the sailing yacht operates with a three-person crew and is designed for high-latitude conditions, allowing access to remote fjords and anchorages beyond the reach of traditional cruise ships.

Arctic itineraries target experiential travel segment

Norrøna Adventure has developed a year-round program around the vessel, including winter whale and Northern Lights expeditions, spring ski-and-sail itineraries and summer voyages through the Lofoten archipelago.

The product focuses on immersive, off-grid experiences, with activities such as Zodiac-style exploration, wildlife encounters, cycling and hiking adventures where appropriate to enable active touring options as part of the small ship expedition style of travel.

For the Australian trade, the recognition provides a marketing hook for high-end clients seeking unique, small-group expedition travel, particularly as demand grows for personalised and remote experiences.

Boutique positioning supports premium pricing

With capacity capped at six guests across three cabins, Varg is positioned at the ultra-luxury end of the expedition cruise spectrum, combining adventure-led sailing yacht itineraries with high-end onboard inclusions.

Features include ensuite cabins, Nordic-inspired design elements and wellness facilities such as a sauna and outdoor hot tub, reinforcing the blend of comfort and exploration.

The recognition from TIME is expected to support brand awareness and demand, particularly in long-haul markets, as operators continue to diversify beyond traditional cruise formats.

As interest in small-ship expedition cruising and bespoke yachting adventure grows, products like Varg highlight the increasing segmentation of the cruise market, offering travel advisors new opportunities to target niche, high-value clients.
