The Northern Territory’s growing cruise sector has taken centre stage, with Tourism Minister Marie-Clare Boothby meeting industry leaders in Sydney to reinforce the region’s role as a key international cruise destination.
Cruise sector drives Territory economy
Cruise tourism continues to deliver strong economic returns for the Northern Territory, contributing more than $205 million in the last financial year – a 13 per cent increase year-on-year.
The figures highlight the sector’s expanding role in supporting local businesses, jobs and regional communities, particularly as Darwin strengthens its position as both a gateway to Asia and a hub for expedition cruising in northern Australia.
Industry collaboration in focus
During the Sydney visit, Minister Boothby met with Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Executive Director in Australasia Joel Katz, alongside Northern Territory Department of Tourism & Hospitality CEO Suzana Bishop.
Discussions centred on the opportunities cruise tourism presents for the Top End, as well as the importance of continued collaboration between government and industry.
Katz said the engagement underscored the significance of cruise to the Territory’s visitor economy.
“Cruise demand is there and the opportunity for the Northern Territory is clear,” he said. “The focus now is ensuring that Australia has the right settings in place to capture it.”
Policy certainty key to future growth
A key theme of the discussions was the need for policy stability at a federal level to support long-term planning and deployment decisions by cruise lines.
With global cruise demand continuing to rise, industry leaders emphasised that clear and consistent policy settings will be critical in ensuring Australia remains competitive.
The Northern Territory has also benefited from increased cruise ship calls during the traditionally quieter wet season, helping to drive year-round visitation and economic activity.
Darwin strengthens cruise hub status
Darwin’s strategic location continues to enhance its appeal as a cruise hub, offering access to Asia and unique expedition itineraries across Australia’s northern coastline.
As cruise lines look to expand deployment in the region, the Territory is well positioned to capture further growth, supported by strong government engagement and industry alignment.
