Pearl Expeditions celebrates first anniversary

Australian-owned Pearl Expeditions is celebrating its first anniversary, marking 12 months since boutique expedition yacht m/y Paspaley Pearl welcomed its first guests in Broome on 10 August 2025.

Part of the third-generation, family-owned Paspaley Group and led by expedition cruise pioneer Sarina Bratton, the operator says strong occupancy, repeat guest demand and travel trade support have provided a solid foundation for its second year.

Small-ship strategy gains momentum

Carrying just 30 guests, m/y Paspaley Pearl operates with a crew of 22 and an expedition team of four naturalists. The yacht also carries three Zodiacs and two fast tenders and fishing boats for exploring remote destinations.

Pearl Expeditions General Manager Mick Fogg said the response from guests had been an important measure of the brand’s success.

“For us, the measure of success has been how strongly guests have responded to the experience we’ve created,” Fogg said.

“From our expert expedition team and destination-inspired dining to the all-inclusive onboard offering and the intimacy of travelling with just 30 guests, every element has been carefully considered.”

The company’s 2027 and 2028 programs extend beyond its Kimberley heartland to East Indonesia, Raja Ampat, Papua New Guinea and Borneo. Experiences range from whale shark encounters in Saleh Bay and searching for Komodo dragons to exploring the fjords of Tufi and travelling upriver to see orangutans at Camp Leakey.

Travel trade delivers strong first-year results

Pearl Expeditions has also credited a targeted distribution strategy with supporting its growth during the first year.

Executive Chairwoman Sarina Bratton said the company identified 30 key distributors across domestic and international markets as part of its launch strategy.

“We are proud that this disciplined approach has resulted in our leading domestic, single-outlet agency generating in excess of $4 million in our first year,” Bratton said.

The broader Paspaley Group has provided operational and logistical support through businesses including Pearl Marine Engineering, Pearl Aviation and Pinctada Hotel Broome.

Guests can also encounter other elements of the Paspaley portfolio during their voyage, including flightseeing opportunities with Pearl Aviation’s Grumman Mallard aircraft, visits to the group’s Kuri Bay pearling base and Paspaley Pearls displayed aboard the yacht.

Second year brings further growth

The anniversary is being marked by guests from the inaugural 10 August 2025 sailing, passengers embarking exactly one year later, the company’s shoreside and onboard teams, and its leading distribution partners.

Bratton said the milestone provided an opportunity to reflect on the company’s rapid development.

“To say we are proud is an understatement,” she said. “This first year has given us a strong foundation from which to grow, and we are excited about the opportunities ahead as Pearl Expeditions enters its second year of operations.”
