Back in July 2025, I tuned into an AmaWaterways webinar covering their re-brand and an exciting new incentive for travel agents. Working with TravelManagers, I’ve seen plenty of agent trips cross my desk, but this one immediately felt special.
The River of Rewards initiative invited Australian and New Zealand agents to experience a 7-night sailing on the brand-new AmaSofia, following the Melodies of the Danube route from Budapest to Vilshofen.
A real highlight was the ability to bring a travel companion, no more sharing cabins with strangers. For once, my husband could join the adventure rather than just saying goodbye at the airport.
Qualification was open to both top sellers and those earning points through monthly challenges, which made it feel truly accessible. I jumped into the challenges from the start and was absolutely thrilled when my invitation arrived.
AmaWaterways went all out with this Mega Famil, and mega it truly was. With only 63 travel agents on board, it was wonderful getting to connect with and learn from one another. Meanwhile, our travel companions, dubbed the ‘plus ones’, had just as much fun forming their own connections along the way.
The Journey
We sailed the Melodies of the Danube itinerary, with Ama operating the trip just as they would for regular guests to give us a genuine taste of the full experience.
From pre-cruise online check-in and downloading the app, to booking shore excursions and managing all the usual details, every step mirrored what an actual guest would encounter.
Low Water Levels
In the weeks leading up to our trip, Europe was facing record-low water levels along the Danube. Ama kept us updated throughout with regular emails, and advised that they don’t cancel, their priority is adapting and delivering the journey in the best way possible.
When it became clear that water levels weren’t rising, Ama notified us of a change, we’d spend our first night in a Budapest hotel, then head out the next morning by coach to meet the AmaSofia in Melk, Austria, with a fascinating stop in Bratislava for the Coronation City Walking Tour.
From a travel agent’s perspective, experiencing the low water situation firsthand was actually valuable. While none of us wanted the itinerary disrupted, going through it ourselves gave us real insight that strengthens how we can guide and support our clients going forward.

This trip truly covered every angle. Pre-Departure and Check-in process
The Online Cruise Check-in is to be completed as early as 60 days prior to departure.
Following checking in online, the Shore excursions can be booked via the myAmaCruise App as soon as possible to guarantee the preferred choices.
Guests will receive their Pre-Departure Documents by email approximately 30 days prior to departure date.
On-board Check-in is done in a smooth and professional manner. The safety briefing is completed in person in the main lounge area early evening by the Cruise team staff.
What is it like onboard
THE SHIP: The AmaSofia, which made its debut in March 2026, carries all the warmth and thoughtful touches AmaWaterways is known for along the Rhine and Danube rivers.
With a capacity for up to 152 guests in 76 staterooms, cared for by a crew of 51 members, life onboard feels personal and well attended. The ship is spread over four passenger decks and offers a choice of four lounges and three restaurants, and a glass elevator connecting Cello to Violin decks.
I especially loved relaxing in the lounge area sipping a coffee or cocktail, depending on the time of day, while the changing scenery slipped gently past the windows. And walking around the sun deck soaking in the sunshine and taking in the sweeping views. This ship makes it easy to find your ideal pace.
THE FOOD: For a river ship of this size, especially compared to the much larger ocean liners, the dining options on AmaSofia were impressive. Guests can choose between three different restaurants:
Journeys Restaurant is the main dining room, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a beautifully light-filled space where every table overlooks the ever-changing scenery.
The Lark Lounge & Bar is a relaxed alternative, serving casual bistro-style breakfast and lunch. It’s also the spot for snack jars, all-day light bites, and a handy self-serve tea and coffee station.
The Chief’s Table dinner is a beautiful experience where we enjoyed a meal of up to 7 courses with wine pairing. Each dish was presented with a detailed description by the table service team, adding a special personal touch to the evening.
A newer option now is The Chef’s Table lunch, featuring a four-course Italian-inspired menu. The pasta was outstanding, and I especially enjoyed sitting by the open curtains and taking in the view as we passed through a lock.
What really stood out for me were the bread and pastries, always fresh and delicious. Knowing that AmaWaterways is the only river cruise line with a dedicated baker on every ship explains why their baked goods are so fresh.
The day-to-day selection in Journeys Restaurant was fantastic, with a wide range of fresh and healthy choices, including salads, poke bowls, and vegetarian dishes, along with the classic favourites. I loved the themed menus that reflected the countries we visited—especially the schnitzel night in Austria and, in Germany, the pretzel and pork buffet lunch. And not to forget the generous cheese table!
THE DRINKS: AmaWaterways offers both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages during lunch and dinner, with the bar available throughout the day for drinks outside of meal times.
A real highlight is the daily Sip & Sail happy hour. Each afternoon, after exploring ashore, we would all gather in the lounge to unwind with a drink in hand and chat about our adventures. There’s an appealing variety of cocktails, mocktails, local beers, and a carefully chosen wine list. My favourite was the lemon drop martini, it was delicious.
At dinner, the wines poured were impressive, thoughtfully matched to each menu, with a particular focus on good quality local wines. As a wine lover myself, I particularly enjoyed this local focus and the opportunity to discover some wonderful regional wines.
Don’t forget the water, especially as it was hot outside. Our stateroom was replenished daily with glass bottles of water, and the lounge featured fruit-infused water dispensers. We also received stainless steel water bottles in our rooms, ideal for taking along on excursions. It was refreshing to see a commitment to sustainability with no single-use plastics in sight.
THE RELAXATION: The sun deck offers a wonderful spot to unwind, whether you’re stretched out on a lounge chair or taking a dip in the pool. The swim-up bar, complete with underwater stools, is a highlight, especially during a summer cruise when the pool becomes the social heart of the ship.
Inside, the lounge is equally inviting, featuring a cosy library nook with a fireplace, as well as a piano and bar. Here you’ll also find the tea, coffee, and water stations, perfect for making yourself a hot drink and settling in by the wide windows as the sunlight pours in.
THE FITNESS: AmaWaterways features a dedicated onboard Wellness Host, with complimentary fitness classes like yoga, stretching, and resistance band workouts available to all guests.
On our cruise, Dylan was our Wellness Host, and one morning I joined his guided walk through Melk village. He led us along a scenic shortcut up to Melk Abbey, where we enjoyed an incredible view. It was a fun and friendly way to get moving, chatting as we wandered through hidden streets I wouldn’t have found on my own.
The sun deck also includes a walking track, perfect for getting some exercise while watching the picturesque villages drift by. For those wanting more of a workout, there’s also a well-appointed fitness room on board.
AmaWaterways provides a fleet of bicycles as well. Guests can take part in guided bike tours or explore independently. Cycling through peaceful countryside and storybook villages was a highlight of the trip, offering both fresh air and a closer look at local life.
THE ENTERTAINMENT: Evenings on board offered a wonderful mix of entertainment in the main lounge and bar, with AmaWaterways regularly bringing in talented local musicians for live performances. The quality of these shows was impressive and added a special touch to our nights.
A cruise favourite for us all was the much-loved music trivia night. What started as a friendly quiz soon turned into an evening filled with laughter, singing, and dancing as everyone joined in together.
On the second to last night, we enjoyed the Captain’s evening, a chance to dress up a bit and mingle directly with the captain during the sip & sail reception in the lounge. It was a memorable way to round out our cruise and say thanks to all the amazing crew onboard.
THE STATEROOM: AmaSofia offers several stateroom categories to suit different preferences:
- Veranda Suite (category SS): Features a separate lounge area, a bathtub and separate shower with double vanities, as well as both an outdoor balcony and a French balcony.
- Twin Balcony Staterooms (categories AA-AB and BA-BB): Come with an outdoor balcony, large window, and French balcony.
- French Balcony Staterooms (categories CA-CB): Include a French balcony.
- Riverview Window Cabins (categories D-E): Feature a fixed porthole window.
During our cruise, we stayed in a Twin Balcony Stateroom on the Cello Deck. The room had a lovely balcony, plenty of storage, and a spacious bathroom with a generous shower. The bed was very comfortable and there was a small sitting area as well. Extras included a full-length mirror, bathrobes and slippers, a coffee machine, an in-room safe, and an umbrella, everything you need for a comfortable stay.
THE SERVICE: The level of service on board was exceptional, with a true focus on thoughtful, personalised attention.
With only up to 152 guests on the ship, we enjoyed regular opportunities to chat directly with the Cruise Manager, Tamas, and the Hotel Manager, Florian. We saw them several times a day, and Tamas was particularly impressive, he made sure every sightseeing tour ran like clockwork and was always available if we had any requests. The whole team went above and beyond, making us feel genuinely looked after.
On our first night, we were introduced to the Captain, first and second officers, and key crew members. The Captain welcomed us and shared that he has an open-door policy, inviting guests to visit the wheelhouse during the day (as long as the ship wasn’t passing through a lock or docking). This genuine openness made the experience feel even more personal and warm.
Shore Excursions
One of the things I really appreciated about AmaWaterways was that daily shore excursions were included at every port. You pre-select your tours before the cruise, but it’s so easy to swap or change plans later, just update them in the myAmaCruise app up to 24 hours ahead, or have a quick chat with the Cruise Tour Manager onboard. I found this flexibility really helpful when I wanted to try something different at the last minute.
What made these excursions truly special was the quality of the local guides. We had guides who grew up in the places we visited, and their passion for their hometowns was infectious. Hearing their stories added so much colour and context, I always felt like I was getting a real, inside perspective rather than just a scripted tour.
We were lucky to experience some incredible excursions, including full day trips to Vienna and Salzburg (it was great seeing the Sound of Music fountain), as well as memorable visits to Melk Abbey and the magnificent St. Florian Monastery. Each outing struck a great balance between famous sites and those smaller, quieter moments that help you feel genuinely connected to a place.
Another thing I appreciated was how the guided walking tours had three activity levels: Gentle (for a slower pace), Regular (just right for most people), and Active (for when you want to get your steps in). The guided bike tours were also clearly marked for activity level and distance, making it easy to pick what suited my mood or energy each day.
These shore days became some of my favourite memories, discovering new corners of Europe, often alongside new friends from the ship, and always feeling like the logistics were handled with care.
Gratuities & Tipping
For guests booking from Australia and New Zealand, AmaWaterways includes prepaid gratuities in the fare. Along with the onboard crew and Cruise Manager, the prepaid gratuities also include the local guides and drivers encountered during the onshore experiences.
To further recognise the contributions of guides and drivers, AmaWaterways is currently piloting a Guide and Driver token system. This gives guests the option to personally give a “token” of appreciation to the people who help bring each destination to life.
Tokens are placed in your stateroom when you arrive, along with clear guidelines on how and when to use them.
Personally, I found the token system really helpful. On a previous Ama cruise about 18 months ago, I struggled with the cash tipping process, not knowing how much to give or when, since tipping isn’t common practice for us. The new token approach removes the uncertainty and awkward moments, making it easier and more comfortable to show appreciation.
