Scenic Discovery Yachts unlock rare access to Emperor penguins

Scenic Discovery Yachts is offering guests one of Antarctica’s most extraordinary wildlife encounters, delivering helicopter access to the remote Emperor penguin colony of Snow Hill Island in the Weddell Sea.

With more than 4,000 breeding pairs, the site is renowned as one of the most difficult locations to reach on the continent—yet Scenic Eclipse makes it possible thanks to its advanced Discovery Yacht design, specialist team and twin on-board helicopters.

A rare wildlife experience made possible by technology

Purpose-built for polar exploration, Scenic Eclipse carries a Polar Class 6 rating, advanced navigation systems and GPS Dynamic Positioning that removes the need for anchoring on fragile seabeds. Its two Airbus H130-T2 helicopters—among the quietest in operation—provide seamless landing access to Snow Hill Island, where traditional ship-based approaches are impossible.

On arrival, Scenic’s Discovery Team leads guests on a short snow walk to a remote vantage point to observe Emperor penguins and their chicks, guided by the on-board ornithologist.

Enriching expeditions with expert-led exploration

Every Antarctica voyage features a team of up to 20 polar specialists who guide daily experiences including Zodiac trips, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, submersible dives and onshore adventures. Guests return to the comfort of Scenic Eclipse’s ultra-luxury onboard offering, featuring multiple dining venues, an expansive spa and all-verandah suites with butler service.

The line will extend its helicopter-led exploration in East Antarctica and the Ross Sea next season, with exclusive landing opportunities at sites such as Mawson’s Huts and the McMurdo Dry Valleys.
