Scenic Eclipse II has demonstrated the unique capabilities of Scenic Discovery Yachts after sailing along the River Thames into Greenwich, showcasing how the ultra-luxury expedition vessel combines ocean cruising with access to inland waterways typically reserved for much smaller ships.
The arrival formed part of the Wonders of Europe: Bordeaux to London itinerary and highlighted the engineering that enables Scenic Eclipse II to navigate both open oceans and iconic rivers while maintaining its all-inclusive ultra-luxury experience.
Advanced technology expands destination access
Scenic Eclipse II is equipped with Azipod propulsion, forward bow thrusters and GPS Dynamic Positioning technology, allowing the ship to manoeuvre through complex waterways and maintain position without dropping anchor on sensitive seabeds.
The Discovery Yacht also features custom-designed stabilisers that are 50 per cent larger than those on comparable ships, while its Polar Class 6 hull allows it to operate from tropical regions to polar destinations.
These capabilities enable Scenic Eclipse and Scenic Eclipse II to sail waterways including the Thames, Seine, Elbe, Guadalquivir, Delaware, York and Cape Fear rivers, connecting ocean voyages with city-centre and inland destinations.
Discovery beyond the coastline
Scenic Group General Manager – Ocean James Griffiths said the Thames transit demonstrated exactly what the Discovery Yachts were designed to achieve.
“Our propulsion, bow thruster and dynamic positioning systems give our Captains the precision and flexibility to access a much wider range of waterways and destinations,” Griffiths said.
The 228-guest ships also feature Zodiacs, kayaks, two Airbus H130-T2 helicopters on selected voyages and the Scenic Neptune submersible, allowing guests to explore destinations from the air, sea and below the surface. Guests can also visit the bridge to learn how the ship’s navigation systems operate in different environments.
Scenic Ikon set to debut in 2028
The Thames milestone comes ahead of the launch of Scenic Ikon in April 2028.
The new Discovery Yacht will accommodate up to 270 guests across 135 all-verandah suites and feature 15 dining experiences, a two-level 1,700-square-metre Senses Rejuvenation Spa and next-generation battery technology designed to reduce emissions, noise and vibration.
Scenic Ikon’s inaugural program will visit 110 ports across 21 countries, including destinations throughout Europe, the Mediterranean, Africa, Antarctica, the Falkland Islands and the Chilean Fjords.
