Australians are increasingly turning to the ocean for relaxation and wellbeing, with new research suggesting restorative travel experiences at sea are becoming a popular alternative to traditional winter escapes.
According to Big Red Group’s inaugural Experience Edit report, a growing number of Australians are embracing what has been dubbed “Seatox Travel” – using time on the water to disconnect from everyday pressures and recharge mentally and emotionally.
Ocean experiences on the rise

The report found demand for water-based experiences continues to grow, with Experience Oz and Adrenaline recording a 19 per cent increase in bookings for reef, island and scenic cruises.
Jet boat experiences have also experienced a five per cent uplift, highlighting the continued appeal of ocean and river-based adventures despite the cooler winter months.
The findings point to a broader shift towards experiences that offer a sense of calm, connection and escape, as travellers increasingly seek meaningful ways to unwind.
Whale watching season boosts demand

The trend comes as Australia’s annual whale watching season gets underway, providing travellers with another opportunity to reconnect with nature while spending time on the water.
From coastal cruises and island adventures to wildlife encounters, ocean-based experiences are emerging as a key driver of winter travel, particularly for families looking to combine relaxation with memorable experiences.
Restorative travel gains momentum

Big Red Group says the rise of Seatox Travel reflects changing consumer priorities, with wellbeing and personal restoration now playing a larger role in travel decisions.
Rather than focusing solely on traditional beach holidays or overseas getaways, travellers are increasingly seeking experiences that help them slow down, disconnect from daily stresses and spend time immersed in nature.
As demand for wellness-inspired travel continues to grow, the ocean appears to be offering a compelling solution for Australians looking for a mid-year reset.
