Check-in was smooth, efficient and personalised—hallmarks of a small expedition vessel. Guests are welcomed directly at the pier in Cairns and escorted aboard. While there is no online check-in portal, the onboarding process is straightforward and fast, with staff handling bags and documentation effortlessly. Visas for the destination were sorted out on board by the staff.
Travel agents should note: Guests with mobility needs or additional assistance can request priority boarding. Transfers can also be arranged through Pearl Expeditions at the time of booking.
On board
The Paspaley Pearl is a beautifully refurbished 30-guest expedition vessel originally built for remote pearl farming operations. Her compact size allows her to slip into narrow channels, fjords and tiny lagoons that larger ships cannot access—an essential advantage for this itinerary. This also adds to the intimacy with fewer passengers.
Onboard life is relaxed yet refined. Meals are a highlight, with fine dining that consistently exceeds expectations—fresh seafood, tropical fruits, house-made pastries and multi-course dinners showcasing local ingredients with gourmet flair. A comfortable lounge, sundeck and bar area offer spaces to unwind after active days of snorkelling, zodiac cruising or village visits. There is even a jacuzzi on the top deck – perfect for unwinding in with a cocktail after a day of adventures.
There are no large-scale entertainment programs—this is a true expedition. Instead, guests enjoy expert-led briefings, cultural presentations, wildlife talks and casual storytelling sessions with the crew.
Speaking of the crew, the expertise of the expedition crew was exceptional, as was the attention to detail from the cabin crew and the interior stewards and stewardess team. By day one, they all knew your name, how you take your coffee and what your drink of choice was.
Cabin
The Horizon Suite is elegantly minimalistic, featuring plush bedding, air-conditioning, large window sliding doors that open to a generous sized balcony, ample storage and modern ensuite facilities. Far from compact, which is surprising for an expedition vessel, it feels inviting and comfortable after long days of adventure.
Daily housekeeping, quality linens and thoughtful touches (like locally inspired toiletries and refillable water bottles) make the cabin a restful retreat. Agents should note: Single supplements and limited solo accommodation are available but must be booked early due to small capacity.

Tips for your clients
- Definitely splurge on the Horizon Suites as the balcony really adds to the experience.
- You don’t have to worry about packing any snorkelling gear as this is all provided on board
- Do take sea-sick medication if you struggle with the less than calm oceans
- Make sure you get any local currency before boarding – there is opportunity to purchase items at ports of call and is a nice way to support the communities
- Pack reef-safe sunscreen as you are visiting fragile ecosystems that need protecting
- You will receive a packing list, but I also highly suggest a waterproof case for your phone that can hang around your neck.
