HX Expeditions has unveiled a one-of-a-kind heritage accommodation experience aboard MS Fridtjof Nansen, launching its immersive new “1896 Cabin” inspired by the company’s earliest expedition voyages.
Historic cabin now open onboard
The newly launched cabin recreates the style and atmosphere of expedition travel from more than 130 years ago, offering guests the chance to spend a night surrounded by period-inspired furnishings and maritime design.
Located aboard HX’s hybrid-powered expedition ship MS Fridtjof Nansen, the experience pays tribute to the cruise line’s origins dating back to 1896.
Expedition history brought to life
The 28-square-metre cabin blends historical authenticity with modern practicality through handcrafted design elements and vintage-inspired décor.
Features include:
- Handcrafted wooden interiors made from recycled oak and barn timber
- Traditional bunk beds and period-style furnishings
- Wooden chests, wardrobes and desks
- A hidden barrel bar
- Vintage maritime artefacts and framed artwork
- A feature fireplace with ambient lighting
- An old-fashioned wooden toilet seat
HX Expeditions said more than 309 working hours went into constructing the immersive space.
Designed to recreate life at sea
The cabin was inspired by the accommodation found onboard HX’s earliest expedition ships and aims to give guests a firsthand sense of historical expedition travel.
HX Expeditions CEO Gebhard Rainer said the project had exceeded expectations.
“The 1896 Cabin has surpassed everything we first envisioned,” Rainer said.
“We hope it gives guests a real sense of what life at sea was like 130 years ago. History, after all, is best remembered when lived.”
Unique travel experiences continue trending
The launch reflects growing demand for experiential and immersive travel offerings as cruise lines continue investing in unique onboard concepts beyond traditional luxury accommodation.
While HX Expeditions continues to offer premium expedition suites and modern amenities, the 1896 Cabin delivers a deliberately nostalgic contrast designed to celebrate the roots of exploration cruising.
The cabin is now available for overnight stays aboard MS Fridtjof Nansen.
