JNTO highlights lesser-known Japan cruise ports for autumn season

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) is promoting a set of lesser-visited Japanese cruise ports ahead of the autumn season, positioning cruising as a way to access regions difficult to reach independently while offering the comfort of unpacking once.

Naoki Kitazawa, executive director of JNTO’s Sydney office, said Japan’s coastal diversity suited cruise itineraries.

“From the volcanic peaks of Kagoshima to the rugged coastline of Hokkaido and the calm waters of the Seto Inland Sea, Japan’s natural diversity is so easy and special to appreciate from the water,” Kitazawa said.

“As we move into the autumn season, cruisers can expect mild temperatures, spectacular autumn colours, fewer crowds and competitive fares.”

Six ports offer distinct shore experiences

Shimizu Port, in Shizuoka Prefecture, offers views of Mt Fuji from the UNESCO-listed pine grove Miho no Matsubara, alongside Kunozan Toshogu Shrine and the Shimizu Fish Market, one of Japan’s busiest tuna landing ports.

Hiroshima Port docks around 15 minutes from the city centre, giving access to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, the Peace Memorial Museum, the UNESCO-listed Atomic Bomb Dome and Hiroshima Castle.

Nagasaki Port sits close to the city centre, near Glover Garden, Oura Cathedral, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Nagasaki Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Museum.

Sakata Port, in Yamagata Prefecture, allows access to a traditional river cruise on the Mogami River, the Kamo Aquarium and the Dewa Sanzan pilgrimage area around an hour from port.

Otaru Port, in Hokkaido, is known for its historic canal, more than 100 sushi restaurants and nearby wineries, whisky distilleries and sake breweries offering guided tours.

Hakata Port, in Fukuoka Prefecture, sits in central Fukuoka City, near Kushida Shrine, Dazaifu Tenmangu and the Yanagibashi Rengo Market, known locally as the “Kitchen of Fukuoka.”
