National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions has begun its first European river expedition, with the new 120-guest Connect departing on the Holland and Belgium: Medieval History and Scenic Waterways itinerary on 15 August 2026.
The ship sails through Amsterdam’s canals and calls at Antwerp and Delft, exploring the region’s art history and Jewish heritage alongside its rivers and countryside.
Trey Byus, chief expedition officer at Lindblad Expeditions, said the sailing marked the start of a broader European expansion.
“This voyage is just the beginning of our expansion in the region, and we look forward to creating even more opportunities for travellers to experience the region through our immersive lens,” Byus said.
Expedition staffing carried over from ocean voyages
Each voyage carries an expedition leader and field staff, with at least one National Geographic expedition expert on board for the inaugural season. Staff lead private tours and curated tastings, consistent with the co-brand’s expedition model on its ocean ships.
Connect was built in 2025 and is designed for sailing through Germany, France and the Netherlands, with wraparound windows and technology the line says supports its sustainability focus.
Rhine sailing and a second ship follow this year
A second itinerary, Rhine River: Castles, Culture and Culinary Delights, also aboard Connect, launches in September and sails through the Rhine Gorge, calling at Mainz, Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Strasbourg and Colmar.
In 2027, sister ship Evolve will debut with a series of Christmas Market itineraries, which the line says will double its European river capacity.
