Ponant Explorations has announced a groundbreaking expedition that will see its luxury icebreaker Le Commandant Charcot complete the first-ever full circumnavigation of Antarctica in early 2028.
Departing from Ushuaia, Argentina, the 64-day voyage will navigate nearly 18,000 kilometres of the White Continent’s rugged coastline – a feat never before attempted by a cruise ship.
This unprecedented journey will take place across two legs: the first heading westward from Ushuaia to Hobart over 30 days, followed by a return leg via the eastern coast lasting 34 days. After a brief two-day stopover in Tasmania, the ship will complete its full loop of the frozen continent.
A new chapter in polar exploration
Purpose-built for extreme conditions, Le Commandant Charcot is equipped with a PC2-class polar hull and a hybrid electric-LNG propulsion system, combining state-of-the-art sustainability with cutting-edge safety and ice navigation capabilities. The vessel’s environmentally responsible design enables it to reach remote and icebound regions with minimal impact.
The itinerary was developed by Captains Etienne Garcia and Patrick Marchesseau, both renowned for their expertise in high-latitude navigation. The duo will jointly command the voyage, drawing on years of polar experience with Ponant.

Journey into the unknown
The expedition promises not only stunning landscapes but a connection to the legacy of iconic explorers such as Ross, Shackleton, Amundsen and Charcot. Guests will trace the routes of these early pioneers, visiting forgotten camps and sites that shaped the history of Antarctic exploration.
“After sailing the Ross Sea aboard Le Commandant Charcot, I was captivated by the majesty of these polar landscapes and the incredible human adventures etched into them,” said Captain Marchesseau.
“Now, we want to allow guests to experience that same sense of wonder and discovery during the first circumnavigation of Antarctica.”
