Cruise growth fuels demand for deeper land experiences

As global cruise demand continues to surge, a growing opportunity is emerging for travel advisors and tourism operators to extend the guest journey beyond the ship through immersive land-based experiences.

According to luxury travel representation agency Slojourn Studio, travellers are increasingly combining cruises with pre- and post-voyage stays that offer deeper cultural connections, wellness experiences and authentic destination immersion.

Land experiences complement cruise travel

Slojourn Studio Sales Director Fiona Cogar said cruising often serves as the gateway to a destination, while time spent on land allows travellers to develop a richer understanding of the places they visit.

“If we think about travel as a form of artwork – which in many ways, it is – cruising is the sketched outline of a journey, while time on land is the painting that fills in the detail and adds the colour and beauty,” Cogar said.

The trend is creating opportunities for luxury hotels, resorts and destination management companies to work alongside cruise operators and travel advisors to deliver more comprehensive travel experiences.

Wellness driving longer stays

Among the destinations benefiting from the trend is Cambodia, where Song Saa Private Island is attracting travellers seeking a restorative escape before or after a Mekong River cruise.

The resort recently introduced Saraan Sanctuaries, a wellness-focused program featuring overwater yoga, nature-based therapies, jungle fitness activities and marine conservation experiences designed to connect guests with the surrounding environment.

In Greece, the Andronis collection is encouraging visitors to experience a different side of Santorini through luxury accommodation, culinary experiences and wellness offerings that extend beyond the island’s popular cruise ports.

“What makes Andronis so compelling is not only the individual properties, but the way they work together, allowing guests to uncover different sides of the island,” Cogar said.

Demand for deeper destination immersion

The growing popularity of longer stays is also supporting demand for bespoke touring experiences.

Companies such as Anecdotes in India and Italy Charme in Italy are creating customised itineraries that allow travellers to explore destinations more deeply through local cuisine, cultural encounters and heritage experiences.

Meanwhile, wellness-focused properties such as Daios Cove in Crete are seeing increased interest from cruise guests looking to extend their holiday with spa programs, recovery treatments and personalised wellbeing experiences.

Opportunity for travel advisors

As cruise lines continue to attract new travellers, Slojourn Studio believes the broader tourism industry is well positioned to capitalise on demand for extended destination experiences.

For travel advisors, packaging land and cruise components together offers an opportunity to increase trip value while delivering more meaningful and personalised journeys for clients.
