Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is broadening its expedition portfolio for winter 2027/28, introducing a stronger focus on warm-climate discovery routes alongside its traditional Antarctic sailings.
While two expedition ships will continue operating in Antarctica, HANSEATIC nature will deploy across the western Indian Ocean, offering ten cruises between October 2027 and March 2028 exploring West Africa, South Africa, Madagascar and the Seychelles.
Polar and tropical exploration
Managing Director Isolde Susset said the expansion reflects the brand’s broader definition of expedition cruising.
“For us, expeditions are not defined by temperature, but by mindset,” Susset said.
“Madagascar and the Seychelles offer extraordinary biodiversity, remote regions and sensitive ecosystems – ideal conditions for authentic expedition-style travel.”
The program allows guests to choose between Antarctic expeditions and tropical discovery cruises, delivered to the same expedition standards.
Madagascar and the Seychelles in focus
The new routes provide access to two of the world’s most biodiverse regions.
Madagascar offers endemic wildlife and remote landscapes, while the Seychelles feature isolated atolls and conservation areas including Aldabra. Zodiac landings in small groups enable close-up nature encounters conducted with environmental sensitivity.
Highlights of the winter 2027/28 season include:
- 8–20 December 2027: Expedition Seychelles – A Warm Winter on Tropical Islands (Mahe to Mauritius), fares from €9,480 per person
- 15–30 January 2028: Expedition Madagascar – One of Evolution’s Most Beautiful Gifts (Mahe to Mauritius via Madagascar), fares from €11,890 per person
Additional combined itineraries will operate between Cape Town, Madagascar, the Seychelles and Mauritius through March 2028.
Guests seeking an earlier introduction to tropical expedition cruising can join two Madagascar voyages aboard HANSEATIC spirit in November and December 2026.
Small ships, immersive access
