HX Expeditions has expanded its pre-departure education program with the launch of a free online Svalbard course, developed in partnership with the University of Tasmania (UTAS), as the expedition cruise line celebrates 130 years since its first voyage to the Arctic archipelago.
New course prepares guests before they sail
Available free to HX guests travelling to Svalbard, the online course has been designed to deepen travellers’ understanding of the Arctic destination before they embark.
Through a series of expert-led modules, participants explore Svalbard’s wildlife, ecosystems, history and principles of responsible tourism. Guests who complete the program receive a joint HX and UTAS Certificate of Attendance.
The new program builds on the success of the award-winning Antarctica pre-departure course and follows the recent launch of the Alaska course, forming part of HX’s expanding suite of university-developed educational resources for Arctic destinations.
Celebrating 130 years of Arctic exploration
The launch coincides with a significant milestone for HX, marking 130 years since the company’s first guest voyage to Svalbard in 1896.
HX Chief Scientist Dr Verena Meraldi said the timing reflects the company’s long-standing commitment to combining exploration with science and learning.
“The timing of the Svalbard course launch is particularly significant. This week, HX commemorates 130 years since its first guest voyage to Svalbard in 1896 – a pioneering journey that helped establish expedition travel in the Arctic,” she said.
Education remains central to the expedition experience
HX said the new course reinforces its philosophy of helping guests arrive better informed and more engaged before setting foot in the destination.
Developed alongside researchers from the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), the program reflects the expedition cruise line’s broader commitment to science, education and responsible travel.
