On Water Expeditions is capitalising on the growing demand for small-ship travel, launching a competition offering travellers the chance to win an eight-day Maldives adventure cruise for two.
Maldives prize highlights active travel trend
The competition prize includes a twin-share cabin aboard a traditional Maldivian dhoni, valued at A$6,980, on a fixed departure sailing from 23–30 November 2026.
Entries are now open and close on 6 August 2026.
The voyage promises a more immersive side of the Maldives, combining island-hopping with activities including:
- Snorkelling coral reefs directly from the vessel
- Swimming with manta rays and sea turtles
- Visiting local fishing villages
- Exploring remote islands and reefs
Freshly prepared meals, often featuring locally caught seafood, are also included.
Small-ship cruising demand surges
The launch comes amid continued growth in the small-ship and expedition cruise sector.
According to recent research referenced by the company, Australian online search demand for small-ship and expedition cruising brands has increased by 64 per cent over the past two years, while searches for “small ship cruises” have doubled since 2022.
The trend reflects increasing consumer preference for more active, experience-led travel focused on cultural connection and remote destination access.
Alternative to resort-style Maldives holidays
On Water Expeditions said the competition also highlights a different style of Maldives travel, moving beyond traditional luxury resorts towards lower-impact exploration.
“The Maldives is often associated with luxury resorts, but this voyage shows travellers a completely different side of the destination,” said Rachel Imber, Brand Manager for On Water Expeditions.
“Guests travel aboard a traditional dhoni, explore remote islands and reefs, connect with local communities and spend their days actively experiencing the ocean.”
Focus on low-impact exploration
As part of the World Expeditions Travel Group, On Water Expeditions specialises in small-group expedition cruising with an emphasis on responsible tourism and community engagement.
The company said its itineraries are designed to minimise environmental impact while supporting local economies and conservation initiatives.
The competition winner will be drawn on 7 August 2026, with no purchase required to enter.
