Scenic Group celebrates 40y with travel agents

Scenic Group has marked its 40th anniversary while outlining major fleet expansion plans, reinforcing its long-term growth strategy across river and ocean cruising.

From land tours to global cruise operator

The Australian-founded company hosted trade and media partners at a performance of Phantom of the Opera in Sydney to reflect on its origins as a land touring operator and its evolution into a global luxury travel business.

Founded in 1986 in Newcastle by Glen Moroney, Scenic began with coach tours, including trips centred around theatre experiences such as Phantom of the Opera.

Over four decades, the business has expanded into a multi-brand operation spanning Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours and Emerald Cruises, with products covering land journeys, river cruising and ocean yachts across more than 100 countries and all seven continents.

The anniversary event highlighted the company’s long-standing relationships with trade partners, which remain central to its distribution strategy in key markets including Australia.

Pipeline signals continued cruise growth

Scenic Group confirmed it will undertake significant fleet growth over the next three years, including the launch of flagship ocean vessel Scenic Ikon, alongside three Emerald Cruises superyachts, three Emerald Star-Ships and two Scenic Space-Ships.

The expansion reflects continued investment in both river and ocean segments, with a focus on expanding capacity and refreshing product to meet evolving guest expectations in the premium and luxury categories.

Scenic also noted its vertically integrated model, designing, building and operating its own ships, which allows greater control over product development and guest experience.

Trade relationships remain central

Scenic Group used the anniversary milestone to acknowledge the role of travel advisors and partners in its growth, reinforcing its trade-first approach.

General Manager Sales and Marketing APAC Anthony Laver said the anniversary was as much about recognising industry relationships as it was about the company’s history.

“For all of the team, this is much more than marking 40 years in business. It is about recognising the innovation that has brought Scenic Group from its early days starting in Newcastle, to the global business network it has created today with its valued partners,” he said.

As Scenic enters its fifth decade, its focus remains on product innovation and network expansion, with the upcoming fleet additions expected to play a key role in driving future growth across the luxury cruise sector.
