Viking has expanded its Nile River fleet with the delivery of Viking Ptah, a new purpose-built river ship designed to carry 82 guests through Egypt.
The ship was officially handed over to Viking at a delivery ceremony at the Massara shipyard in Cairo on 10 August 2026.
Viking President and CEO Leah Talactac said the addition would increase the company’s capacity in a destination that continues to attract strong international interest.
“We are delighted to welcome the Viking Ptah to our growing fleet on the Nile River,” Talactac said.
“Egypt continues to inspire curious travellers from around the world, and with the addition of the Viking Ptah, we are pleased to offer even more guests the opportunity to explore this extraordinary destination in the comfort of a Viking vessel.”
Purpose-built for the Nile
Viking Ptah accommodates 82 guests across 41 staterooms and has been designed specifically for cruising the Nile.
The vessel draws on the Scandinavian design found across Viking’s river and ocean fleets and features the line’s distinctive square bow and indoor-outdoor Aquavit Terrace.
Viking Ptah joins the company’s existing sister ships in Egypt and will operate the 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary.
The journey combines a Nile cruise with exploration of Egypt’s archaeological and cultural landmarks, providing another option for travellers seeking a small-ship river cruise experience in the region.
Viking continues fleet expansion
The delivery comes as Viking progresses a significant expansion of its global fleet.
Under its committed orderbook, the cruise line expects to take delivery of another 20 river ships by 2028, along with nine ocean ships and two expedition ships by 2031.
Those additions are expected to take Viking’s river fleet to 114 ships by 2028, while its combined ocean and expedition fleet is forecast to reach 26 ships by 2031.
Viking currently operates more than 100 ships across 21 rivers, five oceans and all seven continents.
