Windstar Cruises is preparing for another celestial sailing, with flagship sailing yacht Wind Surf set to position itself in the path of totality near Malta for the total solar eclipse on 2 August 2027.
The astronomical event will form the centrepiece of a nine-night Total Solar Eclipse from Greece and Malta voyage, sailing roundtrip from Athens from 27 July 2027.
Weather permitting, guests aboard the 342-guest yacht will experience almost three minutes of totality as daylight fades and stars become visible in the middle of the day.
The voyage follows Windstar’s 2026 eclipse sailings, when guests aboard Star Pride off Iceland and Wind Spirit in the Mediterranean witnessed the 12 August total solar eclipse.
Greece and Malta frame the eclipse experience
Wind Surf’s 2027 itinerary will combine the eclipse with calls across Greece, Sicily and Malta.
Highlights include Monemvasia, the medieval fortress town built into a towering rock formation in Greece, and Syracuse in Sicily, where guests can explore layers of Greek and Roman history.
Valletta will provide the Maltese backdrop for the eclipse, with Wind Surf positioned nearby in the path of totality on 2 August.
Windstar will complement the experience with astronomer-led briefings, eclipse glasses for all guests and a glow-in-the-dark celebration on the eve of the event.
Cabins are now available for the departure, with the cruise line expecting strong interest due to the rarity of the eclipse and the yacht’s limited capacity.
Wind Surf nearing completion of refurbishment
The eclipse voyage will also showcase Wind Surf following a US$7.5 million refurbishment program due for completion in December 2026.
The first stage was completed in November 2024 and included upgrades to the ship’s three top suites, Amphora and Compass Rose restaurants, pool deck and bar, lobby, Yacht Club coffee bar and onboard boutique.
Phase two will update all remaining staterooms with new furniture, bedding, carpets, interactive televisions, artwork and décor.
The broader refurbishment forms part of Windstar Cruises’ investment in its Wind Class sailing yachts, with the redesign program expected to be completed across the fleet by 2027.
Celestial cruising gains momentum
The 2027 voyage adds to growing interest in cruises built around astronomical events, giving travellers the opportunity to combine destination exploration with the flexibility of viewing from the sea.
For Windstar, the intimate scale of Wind Surf allows guests to experience the event from open decks while travelling through some of the Mediterranean’s most historically significant destinations.
