Viking has officially named its newest ocean ship, Viking Mira, during a traditional christening ceremony in Venice, marking another milestone in the cruise line’s ongoing fleet expansion.
The 998-guest vessel has now joined Viking’s award-winning ocean fleet and will spend its inaugural season sailing itineraries across the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
Venice ceremony honours new godmother
The naming ceremony saw Rebecca “Becky” Webb Wilson, an attorney, author, photographer and philanthropist, officially christen the ship as its ceremonial godmother.
In keeping with maritime tradition, Wilson used a Viking broad axe to cut a ribbon, releasing a bottle of Norwegian aquavit to break against the ship’s hull.
Guests attending the event were also treated to a performance by acclaimed Norwegian soprano Sissel Kyrkjebø, who serves as godmother of Viking Jupiter.
“We are proud to welcome the new Viking Mira to our award-winning fleet of elegant sister ships,” said Torstein Hagen, Executive Chairman of Viking.
“We are also very honoured to have Rebecca as our newest Viking godmother. Her lifelong commitment to public service, exploration and cultural understanding is an inspiration to all of us.”
New ship continues fleet growth
Viking Mira becomes the latest addition to Viking’s ocean fleet and follows the cruise line’s ongoing investment in small-ship ocean cruising.
The vessel features 499 veranda staterooms accommodating up to 998 guests and incorporates the Scandinavian-inspired design that has become synonymous with the Viking brand.
Like its sister ships, Viking Mira offers light-filled public spaces, extensive outdoor areas and multiple al fresco dining venues.
With a gross tonnage of 54,300 tonnes, the ship maintains Viking’s focus on smaller-scale ocean cruising designed for destination-focused travellers.
Viking builds on award-winning momentum
The launch comes as Viking continues to receive recognition across the global travel industry.
The company was recently named to TIME’s 2026 TIME100 Most Influential Companies list and was voted the world’s number one ocean and river cruise line in Condé Nast Traveler’s 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards for the fifth consecutive year.
Viking also secured top honours in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards, making it the only travel company to simultaneously hold leading positions in both publications.
The addition of Viking Mira further strengthens the company’s position as it continues to expand its global fleet, which now comprises more than 100 ships operating across rivers, oceans and expedition destinations worldwide.
